Mother's milk of politics

If you care about what kind of companies and corporations you spend your hard earned money on, then I suggest you pick up the book, "The Blue Pages." As the front of the book states, this is a directory of companies rated by their politics and practices. Most importantly, it gives the amount that each corporation gives to the democratic and republican parties. It tells if a company is a subsidiary of a larger corporation and gives the web address of each one (very handy when you want to e-mail the company to tell them you won't be spending your dollars with them anymore due to their political/business practices).

The book is broken down into the following 13 sections:
1. Clothing, Shoes and Accessories
2. Computers and Electronics
3. Finance, Insurance and Real Estate
4. Food and Beverage
5. Health and Beauty
6. Home and Garden
7. Major Retailers
8. Media and Entertainment
9. Restaurants
10. Sporting Goods
11. Telecommunications
12. Travel and Leisure
13. Vehicles, Parts and Gas

At the beginning of each section, it gives a list of the top ten contributors to the democrats and republicans.

The disappointing thing I discovered when reading the book was that many of the corporations give tons of money to both sides of the aisle. Gee, what a shock that big business won't take a stand against the loonies on the left!

Bye Bye, Art

The humorist Art Buchwald passed away a few days ago. His brand of humor was something that is not seen today in writing almost anywhere, and that's sad. It's great that his body of work will live on, and I predict that as time passes he will be better known (and appreciated) in death than in life. I suppose anyone who wins a pulitzer is appreciated a great deal, however.

No one was immune from Buchwald's pen. The Washington elite was obviously his favorite target, and in Washington, there's no lack of targets on a daily basis. I only wish Art could have lived long enough to enjoy the Pelosi/Reid three ring circus. What a roaring good time that would have been!

No matter what your political leaning, take time to read Buchwald. If he can't make you laugh and appreciate the idiocy of Washington, you're way too partisan.

My Cardinals

It may be the middle of January, and spring training is just six weeks away, but I would be sorry if I didn't say something about the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals.

There were numerous times throughout the season they could have cashed it in for a variety of reasons, but they didn't. They fought through adversity unlike any team in recent memory, and brought home the championship to the best fans in America!

Their unlikely run through the playoffs will go down as one of the best, and most unlikely, in the history of the sport. The folks in Wrigleyville hated it, and will hate it even more in 2007 when all that cash they spent this winter doesn't buy them a playoff spot.

Even with a couple of spots on the roster yet to be filled, the Cardinals will put a better team on the field in 2007 than 2006. They are the team to beat in the central division.

Viva, el birdos!
